Having a car and knowing how to drive is not enough for a person to roam along roadways because driving also comes with responsibilities not only for your own safety but also with the people you may encounter along the road.
If you are planning to get a Driver’s License, this article will guide you with everything you need to know about getting a driver’s license here in the Philippines.
What is a Driver’s License?
A driver’s license in the form of an ID is issued by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) that authorizes a specific individual to use or operate one or more types of motorized vehicles such as motorcycle, car, truck, or bus on a public road.
There are three types of driver’s license, namely:
- Student Driver Permit. This type of driver’s license is applicable to those who are seventeen (17) years old and above. If you plan to obtain a non-professional and professional driver’s license, you have to get the student driver’s permit first. The student driver permit is valid for one (1) year only, and it’s not allowed for modification, revision, and renewal.
- Non-Professional Driver’s License. A Non-Professional Driver’s License gives you the authority to drive/operate private automobiles with up to 4,500 GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight), regardless if it’s a manual or automatic transmission. This is valid for five (5) years.
- Professional Driver’s License. A Professional Driver’s License allows a driver (regardless if it’s hired or paid) the authority to drive or operate automobiles. Professional Driver’s License holders are allowed to drive almost all types of vehicles, including motor vehicles exceeding 4,500 GVW like heavy construction equipment. The Professional Driver’s License is valid for five (5) years.
